In this episode, I offer a listener three pieces of advice that you should never do while attending a networking event so you don’t come across like a jerk.

Networking is not about talking to as many people as you can and throwing around your business cards, it is about developing a meaningful conversation that will help you build up strong relationships with these people over time.

The first thing you don’t want to do at an event is scanning the room while you’re talking to someone. Don’t be looking around the room to see who else you can talk to. It is important to maintain eye contact when chatting with someone.

The second thing is not to be a card spammer. If you are just quickly tossing out your business card, the likelihood is that it will end up in the bin. It is important to build rapport with someone before you take the step of offering your card.

The final tip is to never go straight in asking for favours, such as looking for introductions. You have to earn the right to do this. There is a better time and place to ask for help and advice, which is why you should always follow up with them.
